the typhoon that hit the philippines is taking a toll. rachel ferguson is here with the details. >> hi. yes. bopha is now located to the west of the philippines, having moved across the islands. it's still a typhoon, so still a very potent system. winds are sustained at 126 with gusts at 180. so it hasn't changed much recently. it's heading up to the south china sea where it's likely to linger for the next couple of days. its very difficult to see what this storm is going to do, but we will keep a close eye on it. it's still a very powerful system. across the north you're seeing heavy rain continue here. this is because the system is pulling in moisture from the north. but down to the south where the devastation occurred, it is going to be a lot drier, and certainly the winds have died down. so that's good news for the rescue and recovery effort that will be continuing through the next few days. there's another low pressure system headed up it. it will be bringing more snow and really strong winds. winds gusting up to 160 miles per hour. so certainly travel will be dangerous. down towards t
with us tonight. thanks so much. that's "the ed show." "the rachel maddow show" starts right now. >> good evening, ed. thanks. and thanks to you at home for joining us this hour. it was a strange bomb shell in washington today. a little bit of news that came from an unexpected source. bob woodward got his hands on an audio recording of the top commanding general in afghanistan meeting off the record with a fox news analyst. the meeting took place last spring. it was general david petraeus who was at the time commander of all u.s. forces in the war in afghanistan. and on the tape, fox news analyst says that she was asked by her boss, by the chairman of fox news to pass along some very specific advice for general petraeus. >> if you're offered chairman, take it. if you're offered anything else, don't take it. resign in six months and run for president. okay? and i know you're not running for president, but at some point when you go to new york next, you may want to just chat with roger. i just say what i have suggested and that we've discussed is next time you go to new york you're going to
. the labor party -- i was speaking to rachel reeves earlier on, just because they've got their plans wrong. they've cut in the wrong areas, they're not thinking about the infrastructure growth that this country needs to get itself out of the mess. so let's see what it comes up with today. it's just a question of whether he can take it away from some departments and give it to others. of course, there's this whole rich versus poor debate also. the poor we're talking about are only so rich. for instance, taking it away. the free amount of money you can put into your pension before you get taxed on it. at the moment, that's 50,000 pounds. estimates are that it will go down to 30, 40,000 pounds. even if they put it down to 30,000 pounds, it's only going to raise around 8.1 billion pounds extra. when you consider total government spending and borrowing, that's a drop in the ocean. welfare is about 186 billion pounds. you can see the kind of numbers we're talking about. tinkering at the edges as well. there will be more money into education, into science, into infrastructure as well and he'll be
blogger was standing this and said hey, look there, goes rachel madow. and then, hey, it's al sharpton. there goes -- what were all the msnbc guys doing at the white house? apparently they were invited by the white house to talk about what the president's pitch is regarding the fiscal cliff. he's been adamant, the top 2% have to pay a higher tax rate and apparently he wanted the folks from the leftist network all on board with him. >> so in the bush administration, we would sometimes need to do something like talk radio row, i think we called it. it was brilliant. we had the conservative talk radio hosts lined up and get a hole bunch of interviews so they could be persuaded on president bush's plan on things like tax reform, immigration. so from a tactical standpoint, i think president obama is saying, let me talk to people so they make sure they know where i'm coming from. here is the thing that he could do, he is talking to people who agree with him. although some people on the left actual will he want him to go even further left. i think he felt like he need to do shore up those thi
